Your Provisional Licence

Before you can learn to drive a car you must apply for a provisional driving licence.

You must be at least 17 years old to take driving lessons or drive a car. As an exception, if you are receiving disability allowance you are allowed to start driving at 16.

There are a number of ways to apply for your first provisional driving licence. You can use the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency's (DVLA) online service or by completing a D1 application form, available from Post Office branches.
